John M. Fuke John M. Fuke

 

John Fuke is known by Wills and Estates lawyers across Canada and internationally. He has been a lawyer in Ontario since 1965 and has worked almost all of that time in the field of taxation, wills, trusts, estate planning and estate administration. He has been chairman of both the provincial and national Wills & Trust Section of the Canadian Bar Association.  He is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation and in past has delivered papers at its annual conferences as well as written articles for its journal.  He holds the office of Vice-President, The Americas in the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law and is a member of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.  During 1987 he spent a secondment with Revenue Canada in the tax legislation area.  John was named as one of the best lawyers in the Trusts and Estates field in the July/August 2007 issue of the Financial Post Business magazine special report on “The Best Lawyers in Canada”.

M. Gaylanne Phelan M. Gaylanne Phelan

 

Gaylanne is a founding partner of Strathgowan Estate Mediation, established in 2007.  She was also a founding partner of the former Centre for Estate Mediation, established in 1999. Since 1999, she has had a distinguished record of successes in the practice of estate mediation, with over 80% of her cases having settled after one day of mediation.

Gaylanne has been a member of the Ontario Bar since 1978, and has practised law consistently since that time in the field of estates, trusts and substitute decisions.  In addition to her mediation practice, she continues in the private practice of law and acts as Counsel to the firm of Aylesworth, LLP.

Her law practice focuses on estate and succession planning, family business succession, administration of trusts and estates, taxation, and estate litigation.  As an adjunct to her estates practice, she has overseen several significant sales of businesses and corporate reorganizations.  She also has acted as executor, trustee and attorney for property for large Canadian estates and as director of their affiliated private corporations.

Gaylanne is a past President and privileged member of the Estate Planning Council of Toronto.  She is also on the Executive of the Ontario Bar Association’s ADR Section, where she recently chaired its Civil Justice Reform platform.  In 2006 she was a member of the Ontario Bar Association’s Civil Justice Reform Project task force.

She speaks French fluently and is a past President of Le Groupe francophone de l'Association du Barreau Canadien de l'Ontario - région de Toronto.

Gaylanne obtained her Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in 1970 and her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Ontario in 1976 (Dean’s Honour List). She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1978 (receiving the Joseph Sedgwick First Prize and the Vera L. Parsons Prize).  Mediation courses she has taken include the Harvard Mediation Workshop (Advocates’ Society of Toronto); Getting to Yes (the Conflict Management Group, in conjunction with the Harvard Negotiation Project); Family Business Management (Faculty of Management Studies, University of Toronto); and the Harvard Advanced Mediation Workshop (Harvard Law School).
